So how exactly do we make granite countertops?
The process starts in places like Brazil, Italy and India, where
natural granite is quarried in blocks that often weigh upwards
of 40,000 lbs each! The blocks are usually shipped to a factory
in Italy, where huge saws run all night to slice through a single
block. When done, what are left are slabs of granite about an
inch thick that weigh 1,000 pounds each. Next they're polished
on one side, revealing their striking beauty. Our buyers travel
all over the world to these processing facilities to select the
absolute best choices of granite available. We don't accept
second best, because our customer's don't. Once we make our
choices, they're shipped directly to our factory in Virginia.
Once we're ready to make your countertop, a trained technician
visits your home to take precise measurements and prepare a
"shop drawing" of your counter. The drawing and specifications
of your job then go to our plant manager, who reviews them to
be sure they're complete. Our layout and saw department then
cuts your countertop from a slab, passing each piece to the
polishing and drilling departments, where the pieces are edged
and polished and holes for your sink, faucet and cooktop are
made.
After every piece is done, our quality assurance department
measures and inspects each piece as one last check to be sure
the job was done right. Once your countertop passes our quality
assurance controls, our plant manager notifies our customer
service department that the counter is ready for installation.
If you're really curious about the process,
give us a call and we'll be happy
to give you a plant tour.
